Recently my Macbook Pro has started black screening at random intervals. At first I thought it might be the inverter on the blink, but checking the error report it appears to be some kind of kernel panic: Interval Since Last Panic Report: 922049 sec Panics Since Last Report: 5 Anonymous UUID: is it? :/ Fri Jul 13 09:29:46 2012 panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9f5c9b): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0x0a2910de 0x00100000 0x00000000, BAR0 0xc0000000 0xa7142000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P3/4 Backtrace (CPU 2), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x94362188 : 0x21b837 (0x5dd7fc 0x943621bc 0x223ce1 0x0) 0x943621d8 : 0x9f5c9b (0xc0b28c 0xc7b800 0xc19e60 0x0) 0x94362278 : 0xb10608 (0xdee6804 0xe424004 0x100 0x14d15300) 0x943622c8 : 0xb07601 (0xe424004 0x100 0x943622f8 0x9e5778) 0x943622f8 : 0x17499a6 (0xe424004 0x100 0x438004ee 0x1) 0x94362438 : 0xb2f2b5 (0xe424004 0xe425004 0x0 0x0) 0x94362478 : 0x9fee7c (0xe424004 0xe425004 0x0 0x0) 0x94362518 : 0x9fb55b (0x0 0x9 0x0 0x0) 0x943626c8 : 0x9fd58f (0x0 0x600d600d 0x702b 0x943626f8) 0x94362798 : 0xcc0eae (0xc1d00041 0xbfef0033 0xbfef0034 0x857c) 0x94362808 : 0xcd0734 (0xefcb000 0xeffaa80 0x8 0x1) 0x94362828 : 0xcf5322 (0xeffaa80 0xb 0x94362848 0x2345f4) 0x94362858 : 0xcf5b3d (0xe9d5000 0x0 0x9436287c 0x0) 0x94362888 : 0xcd5d79 (0xe9d5000 0xa4911080 0x0 0x0) 0x943628d8 : 0xc97d0c (0x6d45c000 0x0 0x0 0x3) 0x94362948 : 0xc9740f (0x6d45c000 0x0 0x2 0x3) 0x94362978 : 0xc8d05f (0x6d45c000 0x0 0x2 0x6d407000) 0x94362ab8 : 0xcc65d8 (0x6d407000 0x1 0x94362bcc 0x94362bc8) 0x94362b68 : 0xc88fe1 (0x6d407000 0x1 0x94362bcc 0x94362bc8) 0x94362be8 : 0x56da06 (0x6d407000 0x0 0x94362e3c 0x94362c74) 0x94362c38 : 0x56e2a5 (0xd17720 0x6d407000 0xf67b388 0x1) 0x94362c88 : 0x56eb59 (0x6d407000 0x10 0x94362cd0 0x0) 0x94362da8 : 0x286638 (0x6d407000 0x10 0xf67b388 0x1) 0x94363e58 : 0x21dbe5 (0xf67b360 0xfdff5a0 0x1ecfa8 0x5943) 0x94363e98 : 0x210a86 (0xf67b300 0x0 0xe61e3f0 0xecf4dc0) 0x94363ef8 : 0x216f84 (0xf67b300 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x94363f78 : 0x295c57 (0xdc71888 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x94363fc8 : 0x2a256d (0xdc71884 0x0 0x10 0xeeef120) Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies): com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0xc7d000->0xd33fff dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x98f000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x982000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x949000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x960000 com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x1613000->0x1a27fff dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x98f000 com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x98f000->0xc7cfff dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x949000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x982000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x960000 BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer Mac OS version: 10K549 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun 7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386 System model name: MacBookPro6,2 (Mac-F22586C8) System uptime in nanoseconds: 365714113489 unloaded kexts: com.apple.driver.AppleUSBUHCI 4.2.0 (addr 0x1430000, size 0x65536) - I have googled it and it seems there are a LOT of unanswered threads on this very same issue out there. I cannot believe the problems we have with our macbooks. [mini rant] This is the 4th hardware problem for mine, and we have had at least 2 mac-support callouts for other machines (and considering we are a company of 8 people that is -really- bad.... um.. luck). If only you could sign iOS apps with a linux or windows machine (or at least run OSX properly on something else) :( GRR! [/mini rant] Last edited 2012 |

It looks like a kernel panic in the NVIDIA graphics driver. I would try first installing OS X on top of itself in the hope that overwriting the driver will solve it. If that fails you could look for a 3rd party replacement but they're hard to find and unreliable so I would instead make an appointment at an apple store and show them the logs, if replacing the driver doesn't fix it it's likely to be a hardware problem with the graphics card. If you're really desperate to get off apple hardware you could build a hackintosh, but you do run the risk of being blocked from development so probably not worth it. That is *shockingly* bad luck with mac hardware. I have only ever had 2 macs with any hardware failures in 20+ years (first gen iMac which went wrong 3 times but they eventually pressed boards that worked, and a powerbook that had it's screen just up an die for no reason). I do know someone who had 2 chronic problem macs back to back, but by and large it's pretty rare to have anything more than the occasional issue as a result of a manufacturing flaw (no manufacturing or QC process if flawless). If you're still under applecare and you've had that many hardware problems you could ask to get the system swapped, they did it for a friend of mine after his Powerbook Tianium lost a keyboard and then the monitor within 2 weeks of each other. It was cheaper for them to replace the system than to risk having to keep fixing it (since it was the motherboard cooking the other components) so they just replaced it. Last edited 2012 |
