Does anybody know what .MD2 file format stands for literally?

Nope but it's a Quake2 Model, u probably already knew that...

In Quake they used the .MDL extension for 3d models where MDL obviously is short for MoDeL. So for Quake2 they used the extension .MD2 where MD means MoDel and the 2 refers to Quake2, this is the same for .MD3 models used in Quake3. So now you might ask why they did not use the extensions .MDL2 and .MDL3 for the sequels to Quake...well, simply because they thought that a 3 character extension looked better. :-D
