Weekly modeling competition: Creature

Gotta start a new thread since I won last week... This is a very, very open subject, and I made it that way so that near anyone could enter their own idea. Basically, make something- be it an animal, a plant that can move around and stuff, etc.- that would be alive (doesn't have to want to kill you or anything- it can be a docile creature). I don't have any examples at the ready, but I'll try to get one up as soon as I can. For the sake of limits, the restriction is 1200 polygons and one 512x512 texture map and one 256x256 texture map (you can have multiple texture maps of the same size if you want to add normal/bump maps and or specular maps). Texture maps and staying under the polygon and texture size limit are not a requirement, it just scores you more points in my book if you do. Hope folks participate, have fun. |
| ||
you should have made the theme something todo with halflife2 LOL ;) |
| ||
Probably. What happens in the case that nobody enters? Should it loop around to the first person who started the competitions? (halo) |
| ||
No, you enter an infinite win loop. :) *sound of one-arm-bandit paying out jackpot* |
| ||
Oooo, then I'd win twice. This might look good on my resume ;) |
| ||
I'll post some older stuff up tomorrow, although if anyone else submits anything, then my entry will become null and void! We really need to try and keep this thing going! I guess if next weeks comp is slow then mybe it has run it's course though? edit: no need to put my stuff up now! |
| ||
Texture maps and staying under the polygon and texture size limit are not a requirement That being said, my entry: ![]() |
| ||
Didn't you go over the poly limit? :) |
| ||
I guess it would be considered to be pushing my luck polygon wise: hires version ![]() lowres (4k poly 512x512 texture) ![]() old work but maybe it will tirr up interest? |
| ||
People seem too tired to enter the contests. Maybe we should have them on a longer time period... like a month or every second week (i hope you know what i mean with every second week i dunno how to explain it otherwise). Very nice characters both of you! |
| ||
i hope you know what i mean with every second week i dunno how to explain it otherwise fortnightly. |
| ||
I agree. A lot of us have a lot of work. But, I like keeping things fresh. So, maybe combined contests like a contest for this, this, and that. |
| ||
Personally I think we should just exclude the likes of Mustang, Noel and Tigerz then it won't be quite so demoralising. :) |
| ||
Greetings Puppies, Do you know, I didn't know that monsters had willies! It's that sort of attention to detail that everyone should strive for. Peace, Jes |
| ||
SoggyP, You don't wanna know what game TigerZ did that model for!!!! ;) |
| ||
Personally I think we should just exclude the likes of Mustang, Noel and Tigerz then it won't be quite so demoralising. :) :) Well... so far I have not yet won any of the compos I have entered... Since I don't have time to do new stuff, I show "one we have prepared earlier" [real-time shots]. It's very light on texturing, one 256 map and that's all (plus one code generated cubemap not shown here) - but at least the polycount is way over the limit here :P ![]() ![]() ![]() |
| ||
To someone like me the comps are just a way of looking at some awsome models.... I agree about expanding the time period though. Could maybe have two competitions on at once (made on rather different fields) and run them together. Oh yeah, and within the 'Poly' limit (what, Tri's?) .http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/aabants/_Yurk.jpg Edit: changed to this: ![]() |
| ||
well lets just say that the game woulve been called "Small sausage" or "3 willie" or "Revenge of the willies" :P |
| ||
might be nicer to do simpler , less time consuming stuff, (just a thought) |
| ||
An old critter I've had laying around.![]() and a little motion test. http://www.redgreenbob.com/proofs/pongo/gfx/dino.mpg |
| ||
most impressive there TZ... hey, all of em look rather nice... inspires me to get a lil more experience making organics... --Mike |
| ||
I really like the chip-carved look of pongo's critter. |
| ||
not chip carved, it looks like it was carved in soap. |
| ||
Well, I liked mine and TigerZ's the most. ;) TigerZ is the winner. |
| ||
cool :D so... do i create a new thread for another comp or should I wait for people to settle down for next week? |
| ||
In this case, I'm not sure. I think starting another comp. with a simple subject is safe though, it's up to you though. This one was perhaps might have had people going for really complex ideas when not neccessary. |
| ||
For the next topic, I would say: 1. make it something simple (model a planet) <- more of a texture comp than anything, but anyone would be able to contribute. or 2. make it last 2 weeks this time or 3. both! |
| ||
Pongo's critter is awesome! Gives a nice Clay feeling to it. I can allready picture it in one of those nifty, colourful stopmotion clay anims. fun stuff :) |
| ||
Pongo, don't make it too simple. at least something with a few shapes ;) oh yeah this is mine: It's a retarded zombie or something... ![]() |
| ||
did I imagine it, or was that a Pilbury dough boy on the desk in Pongo's vid clip..? |
| ||
CodeD - isn't that the mummy from some weeks ago? uh, you just can't kill them :) |
| ||
RiK,... yup The Pilsbury Doughboy is one of my day job clients. Working on one right now as a matter of fact! |
| ||
Hey Pongo that movie is really nice! It looks like a "real" movie with the creature somehow pasted into it? |
| ||
yes, the mummy returned! |
| ||
Actually the background is a real shot that originally was just the box on the table. I did this as a motion tracking test. The dino, doughboy, and Torus intersecting the box are 3D rendered. |
| ||
Cool, how did you do the motion tracking? |
| ||
Motion track done with 3dsMax's built in tracker,... it didn't do a good enough job for us though so now we have a shiny new tracker for all these shots.(SynthEyes 3-D in case you are wondering) The built in tracker actually works pretty well when you have a very controlled shot, and you can measure out EVERYTHING. The new software allows me to just input a shot and output the 3d data. (ok,... it's not quite that easy, but much easier for unknown shots) |
| ||
Know of any cheap motion tracking software... and cheap as in indie/shareware cheap ;-) |
| ||
None left that I know of. There used to be a free one called icarus that was decent, but it got bought out and is now sold for several thousand. If you do enough searching you may find the old free version. Other than that,... Syntheyes 3D is one of the cheapest ones I've seen, and it also happens to be one of the better ones. (which is nice) Anyways,... I guess this has gone off topic quite a bit,... should probably start a new topic if it goes on longer. |
| ||
CodeD.. That's a nice mummy there! ;) We still could use it as a trash can in our game though! :o |
| ||
Put fire on the mummy and make it run around in circles screaming, and you've got yourself a Hollywood-quality film. |
| ||
I say the next competition should be food. I've already claimed making a hotdog! |
| ||
Motion tracking SOFTWARE isn't the problem IMHO, it's the Hardware. You need 2 high resoltuion hispeed cameras that can be synchronized. You will then use some markers that will reflect infrared light. The software will then recognize the various markers and extract the bones animation data. But probably you'll be able to do it with some simple webcams and a bitz app. But yu still need to be able to record from 2 cams at the same time. A cheap solution could be to use 2 PCs. you would then record 2 movies, then copy both movies to one machine and use some sync tags in the background of the movies to sync them. The you only need to do some Readpixel and 3D Math to extract the animation. Of course you need some highly reflective markers, they are used as protection clothes for street workers etc. and some infrared spotlights, used for nightvision and night video recording. you could also create markers of coloured LEDs, this would make it easier to recognize the various markers logicaly (what's feet, what's hands, what's the head etc.). it's only important that the markers can be seen from most perspectives. |
| ||
Actually, you are talking about something completely different. Motion tracking is quite different than Camera tracking, and you do not need 2 cameras for either, although some motion trackers use multiple camera systems. The markers reference you made is how some motion capture software works, but there are many different ways to do this. As for the camera tracking, which is what I was talking about,... you may or may not need trackers, depending on your scene, and you definately only need one camera, whether it's a cheap hand held, or an expensive HD or film camera. The only shots I've ever had to use markers on, was one on a soccer field since the grass did not have any trackable features. The other was a field of tall grass and trees on a windy day,... everything was moving so bad there was nothing stable to track, so we put tennis balls on poles and touched them out later. |
