First actual attempt at an organic model

This is my first real attempt at an organic model. It's supposed to be a STAR WARS Fambaa (see the bottem picture), but at the moment, it's looking a lot like a dinosaur. I'm trying to figure out how to sculpt details in, but I keep botching it up. I need comments and criticisms (lots of criticisms) and suggestions (like "Don't try organics!"). Also, this is NOT for real-time rendering...the polycount is just too high (however I can make it 868 and it doesn't look too bad from a distance in the offchance that someone wants it), Also, I'm gonna try to bump map this bad-boy.

The image I'm trying to get it to look like (minus the thing on its back), It's heavy

PS: Where can I keep a scaley texture like the one used in it?

EDIT: Wow...It looks a lot crappier when the two are put up together...

I think it's pretty good. You could create your own scaley texture, and uv wrap it yourself.

One thing I think you should look at would be the toes on the feet, make them a bit more spread apart.

Thanks, fixed the toes, I'm trying to "seperate" the belly from the legs...can't really figure out how...(i'm using 3ds max)

How do I make the texture for the scales??

Its got too many hard edges. Add more edge loops, so when you subdivide you get rounder shapes. Try to work mainly in quads also, concentrating on good clean topology.
I can tell by the look of your smoothed model , that you have n't really done that so far.
It would help if you posted the wireframe version anyway.

Try and line up the ref pic in the background of your 3d app and copy the side view of the creature as your's seems way off right now.
keep trying though man

thanks, I'll work on that tomarrow, but for now...(collapses and falls asleep)

Here are 2 images from dragon/dinosaurian kinda creature, you may use them as reference and inspiration ;)

The legs will have to be extruded from the belly to create the look that Maximo showed you. See how they weld together into the body, but aren't one big thing? Difficult to do, but looks very good in the end if done correctly.

I can create a uv wrap for you once you are done with the model if you wish. Sometimes it's the hardest part. After that I can give you the uvwrap and you texture it, or attempt to and I and the community can give you feedback/tips on what to do.

OK, I did some work on the belly and legs, I'll post it later :P

Hey Maximo, is that a ZBrush/ZSphere creature? You have some rotation on the front lower legs.
