A question for UK employers (are there any here?)

While I'm still waiting for HMRC to get their asses in gear and send me my Unique Tax Reference number, I've been going over various payroll software trying to decide which to use. I've narrowed it down to three.

1. MoneySoft Payroll Manager
2. Sage One Payroll
3. 12Pay

From all of the above I really like MoneySoft, but then I feel slightly lured by the Sage "brand". I've kind of dismissed 12Pay as it looks and feels quite amateurish in design, even though it would get the job done.

They all cost around the same p/a, so that's not a point of contention. Also, they all handle RTI PAYE, so that isn't a deciding factor among them either.

Actually, after having had a lengthy play around with Sage, it's bloody awesome. Accounting and payroll costs £18/month, which is more than the other two, but they are both integrated which will make life a lot easier.

Plus I had a query about how to do something, and got a reply from Sage support in four minutes - ON A SUNDAY!

Very impressive.

Sage is what i've seen most companies I've worked for use. It's supposed to be very easy to use and powerful with great support. But, you already know that now :D

Yep... but check out the feature list for Moneysoft Payroll Manager!

Also, having read loads of reviews, hardly anybody has a bad thing to say about it.

It's a very close call. I'd have to deal with separate accounting, but doing so will save me around £120 a year.

All accounting people I know deal with sage as its the product that has been going for decades :)

It has, but look at the prices for the top-end versions. I like the fact that Moneysoft can produce loads of different forms required by HMRC. The entry level versions of Sage don't seem to do that.

Where can I read more about 'accounting' and 'payroll'? I have no clue what these are.
If someone can briefly explain, that'd be great too.

Payroll - paying the people you employ.
Accounting - keeping records of how much you paid them (and other financial stuff).

I use Sage for accounting and will be using Sage for Payroll soon, at the moment my accountant does the monthly payroll.
Sage seems to be the standard.

Sage is the standard,i do not think you can get any better.(my opinion)
