Hey all, I'm just doing some shameless advertising for my game again :)

FreeWorld is a MMORPG made entirely in blitz (and they said it wasn't possible :P), its taken a long time, but if you've seen previous phases then you will agree that its getting better all the time.
Background information about the game can be seen here

Heres some screenshots (click for larger):

Main additions since last time we were open to the public:
+Magic (at long last)
+Brand new and improved GUI
+Many improvements to graphics (especially to trees & plants - thanks to AlienCodec for the help there)
+Improved combat
+Various "user friendly" additions to make the game easier to play

If you'd like to have a go, visit www.freeworldonline.com/signup.php before the 15th to get an account and play right now (141MB full download, 92MB min).

If you have any trouble getting started get help on the forums or contact support or simply post here and I'll try to help.

I'd love to hear comments about the game, or just the screenshots if you don't have time to play it right now.

Thanks for reading!

Very nice King Dave. I've been following FreeWorld for a while now and it seems to get better and better with each public outing.

RifRaf(Posted 2005) [#4]
i get invalid ID.. reinstall i do reinstall and i get the same error.

King Dave(Posted 2005) [#5]
RifRaf - If you have a copy of the BlitzSys dll installed can you check to see if the DLLCRC32File function is working for you?

You should only get that error if the id.dll isn't the right file... it should be exactly 9,728 bytes and have a CRC of -1396772164

Have you been able to get in at all?

GNS(Posted 2005) [#6]
I got that error as well. It seems the shortcut on the desktop doesn't work but launching the game from either Start -> Programs or the FW directory works perfectly.

King Dave(Posted 2005) [#7]
Strangely this isn't effecting everyone, but as GNS said it seems to be fine for everyone if you don't use the desktop link (the desktop icon option was only added in the latest install which was made yesterday).

RifRaf(Posted 2005) [#8]
I did get in by running the program from its folder, and not from the shortcut.

King Dave(Posted 2005) [#9]
Narrowed it down to a small error in the install script in the full install if music files were installed.

The install is going to be fixed very shortly to avoid more people having this problem, thanks for the help!

I have to say it, its more then a free basic game :)
Keep working.

Im curious...

Seriously, just for interest's sake, I was wondering how many people it has taken to produce this, what sort of 3rd party tools were used, and how long since it's very first conception?

I haven't had the opportunity to see anything other than the website and screenshots, but I am very impressed.

King Dave(Posted 2005) [#12]
Thanks for the compliments :)

Currently we have about 12 people on the team, although only about 5 of us are active on a daily basis (e.g. we have music and sound guys who will do work occasionally when we need it, not everyday).

Third party tools... well, I basicly don't do anything outside of coding and the website (I'm useless with anything media wise), so I'm not 100% sure what the other members have been using.
I know some of our more recent dungeons have been made using Maplet, apart from that I haven't got a clue! lol

I originally started with a 2D version but that only lasted about a month in roughly October 2001. So the version you see now has taken a bit over 3 years so far (note that all of us are doing this in our spare time, not full time).
Over those 3 years we've made:
+128,232 lines of code (3.63MB - game, patcher, server, editors, etc)
+3,888 items (armour, food, weapons, spells, etc)
+148 characters (including playable, monsters & npcs)
+62 maps

I can't wait till this is done, lol

Wow this is very good! well done. How much will it cost eventually?

Erroneouss(Posted 2005) [#14]
ehmmm.... "Free"World Online
ummmm... duh?

Make the sky less deep-blue.
The contrast with the other colors makes my eyes hurt :)

Appart from that it looks very good, I tried the demo some weeks ago and as an RPG-fan, I enjoyed it.

_PJ_(Posted 2005) [#16]
Thanks, KingDave - That's good to know. It's quite an incentive to show what Blitz is really capable of; aside from the usual graphics demos and mimicking cutting edge tricks; given the time, patience and dedication. Motivating stuff!

As you stated:
a MMORPG made entirely in blitz (and they said it wasn't possible :P)

Good Luck with it all!

I test it on a family basic pc
a dell 2.20ghz
515 Ram
intel graphics card (:S)
Fast cable connection

the game was running slow. (sometimes fast)
So I think that this game is in first place for the real gamers. (they that have a expensive 3d card and 3.0)
And that's the point, I don't know if the commercial gamer want to play this game.

But I must say: everything I saw was working.

[edit] maybe the camera must follow you when you do alt-c and go under the big tree, because I don't see where my player is.

King Dave(Posted 2005) [#18]
Turkwoyz / theduck - The games name isn't ment to be an indication on the price :P
We don't intend to charge as much as most current MMORPGs (partly because we'd be foolish to try and compete with them), but we will have to charge something at least to cover the server costs.

GC-Martijn - yeah that intel card will be letting you down a lot..
The tree/block thing in the crouching part of the tutorial will (hopefull) be replaced with something round soon to allow the camera to slide under with the player, at the moment its shape is causing the camera to get stuck.

ehmmm.... "Free"World Online
ummmm... duh?

Id imagine that's free as in free-dom.
