Meet George - able tank commander!

This is the frontend to Tank Universal. (Basically, I got sick of generic male video game heros and have designed a back story around an old geezer ;-)

Purchased the head+texture from Turbosquid, lighting courtesy of Giles.

Crits welcome (I'm aware it could still do with some work - hands look odd, and I can't seem to get Giles to accept smoothed surfaces/groups)

Is he a tank commander then? The poor chap doesn't look capable of getting off the chair, let alone jumping into an Abrams.

Still it's a nicely done scene, just looks a bit odd :)

I'd tone down that light... it looks like there's a 2000w bulb in it about to make the lampshade burst into flames.

about to make the lampshade burst into flames.

... just as well, because what the scene is missing is a roaring fire in the hearth. The room is too clinical - it should still smell of a dog (that has been dead and gone for 10 years) and have some worn patches in the carpet (a track between the biscuit tin and the toilet.)

But I like your style - especially the contrast with the VR game world of TU.

you guys are terrible... you find every lil thing to nit pick about...

don't pay any attention to em MJ... even though you did ask for crits :)

hey... it's a game about a tank commander... isn't it... sorta like the movie saving private whatshisname...

where you take a trip back into the life of this guy... right...

that sounds like a cool approach... even though we know that the guys gonna survive the war ;)

Nice design. Yes add a fire.

On coming back to this for a second look, I think you're absolutely right - the room is too neat - needs (as you say) worn spots and a few stains on the carpet, at least one rug and if not a fire in the hearth, at least evidence of past fires. Also, I do plan to add a cat somewhere in there as well - maybe Psionic's free cat model.

As for the industrial strength lampshade, there is a bloom fx going on and the brightspot helps to lead the eye (I think) from the logo top left across to George's face - but I might tone down the light's intensity a little.

Thanks for the feedback all.

Aw, I was going to suggest a cat. Make sure you can stroke it with the mouse to make it purr more loudly. :P

...stroke the cat with the mouse?! Hmm, that's sounds all wrong. :)

If I get the time, I might link some animations to the menu items e.g mouse over the credits and the cat wakes up and and purrs, mouse over new profile and George leans forwards expectantly...

MadJack(Posted 2005) [#10]
...or flips you off

(actually I need an exit option on that screen)

needs a military badge somewhere, most old veterans wear the badges :)

MadJack(Posted 2005) [#12]
Veteran?

I never said he was a veteran.

JustLuke(Posted 2005) [#13]
Stylistically speaking, I'm not sure that I like this. I dig the idea that the player is an old man rather than a young heroic type, but something about the actual image seems... drab. I think the problem for me is not the man or his chair, but the living room environment.

If I were you I would strip out the old geezer's living room and replace it with the command chamber of his VR tron-like tank (or whatever you call them in your game.) It would convey your idea just as well. In fact, the stark contrast between the guy, his musty smelling old-man chair, and the futuristic interior of his VR battle tank could be even more effective. You could even keep the table and cup of tea in there too, I guess.

Lemort

I hear you, but George's living room is part of the storyline's beginning and as such needs to be introduced as just a living room without, I feel, further enhancement.

But once the player starts the game, that's when the contrast between George's cosy little world and the big bad VR world becomes apparent.

New name for the game... "To the Victor, the Spoils !"

Booticus(Posted 2005) [#20]
Forgive me, but who is that a picture of?

BlackJumper(Posted 2005) [#21]
Victor Meldrew - a cantankerous old git from a BBC comedy called "One Foot In the Grave"

Smurfpuss(Posted 2005) [#22]
is this going to be a strategy game like command and conquere or a fps or simulator
