Sorry for starting a new topic, but I figured the other thread had gotten a bit long winded on joystick controls, and may not be getting read anymore.

Here is a movie of the game.

See the readme in the .zip for more info,... may require a faster computer at the moment, since it has not been optimized yet.

The game requires a dual stick joystick to get the most out of it, but there are keyboard controls as well for those without joypads. (although the experience will suffer a bit)

Feedback welcome

I really enjoyed playing that its quite addictive once you get used to the keyboard controls and I love the explosions and mayhem...Great job!!

Geehawk(Posted 2006) [#3]
Never thought I'd get used to the dual stick controls, but I was very wrong, the learning curve was very short.

This is so retro I have to say its "ACE".

Lovin' it.

degac(Posted 2006) [#4]
Can you add support for mouse to aiming? I'm going crazy with keys+joystick.
addictive...

Decent take on Geometry Wars. Unfortunately, the X-Axis for stick one is inverted for my Xbox 360 controller ... right is left and left is right.

TartanTangerine (was Indiepath)(Posted 2006) [#6]
Really Really Nice, but why do I have to press the joystick down to fire! please let me assign a firebutton.

Jeremy Alessi(Posted 2006) [#7]
LOL, the whole point is dual analog controls ... one moves the other fires in any direction.

Anyway, between this and the other GW knockoff you guys are pretty close. This one seemed to feel good but without having the controls working right it's hard to tell exactly. Make sure to set a decent deadzone in the analog too if you update it.

SSS(Posted 2006) [#8]
I love this game! seriously... never played geometry wars on xbox360 but this is so much fun! good job.

Btw Jeremy, did you try deleting the joypad.ctf and then just pushing the stick in the other direction?

Jeremy Alessi(Posted 2006) [#9]
I reset the controls twice ... didn't delete any files though. The controls initially didn't work at all with my gamepad ... then every time I go through the config no matter which way I push them for the test ... the left stick X-Axis is inverted. If you're going to knock off Geometry Wars you'd better at least make it work right with the proper controller ;P

TartanTangerine (was Indiepath)(Posted 2006) [#10]
yeah I figured the fire control now. I never played the original and I don't play many games at all. I think I'll play this a little more though when it's finished.

@ Jeremy,

Pongo made this for his own xbox360 controller so it's strange that you can't get this to work on yours. Delete the .cfg file so that you get the config set up screen again. When testing the analogues if the axis is inverted just right click on that axis it to correct it.

Stevie

Pongo(Posted 2006) [#12]
yes to what Stevie said above. Works flawlessly on my xbox 360 controller here, as well as 2 others I have tested it on. Odd that you are saying your 360 controller has an inverted axis though (all of the axis on my 360 controller are normal) The direction(right/left) you move in the config does not matter, since I only detect movement on the axis to determine which one is being moved.

For those having trouble,... Delete the .cfg file and run it again. Make sure the dots in the boxes are moving correctly, or the sticks won't work right in the game. If an axis is inverted, right click in the blue box, and it will become orange to show it has been inverted.

If you do not have a dual stick, but a single stick only, you can assign the stick 2 axis controls to stick 1 also. Then you will just shoot forward whenever you are moving. Not really the same, but at least a bit playable for you.

also, you can hover your mouse over any blue box, and use the mousewheel to change the axis manually if the other method is giving you trouble.

I've actually got a fairly high deadzone already, but I will make it an option to change on a later release.

Funny about the Joy button 1 thing, I should have taken that out of here... the first few times I played Geometry wars I did the same thing (until I realised you fired with the second stick.)

For anyone still having trouble with config,... run the config, go to debug and watch the bars move. Some will go from -1 to 1, others will go from -180 to 180. Are you getting anything else weird happening? I have heard of some sticks reporting to 255, so I may need to tweak the config a bit for those.

Jeremy Alessi(Posted 2006) [#13]
Very strange it worked that time. Somehow the first time it screwed up because I played with the keys first and then the gamepad. Anyway, that's fun ... no deadzone problems with this one. However, I'd find the game more enjoyable with no inertia as in the original. It makes dodging things a chore by comparison but it's cool that you made it a bit of your own with that. Good job ... especially the bouncing particles etc...

Regular K(Posted 2006) [#14]
No keyboard support?

Looks interesting though, looks nice.

TartanTangerine (was Indiepath)(Posted 2006) [#15]
Keyboard works fine for me.

jhocking(Posted 2006) [#16]
Make sure to read the README because it's not obvious how to skip past the joystick configuration and play with keyboard controls.

Pongo(Posted 2006) [#17]
Yea, definately read the readme,... it has info in there that should solve most problems.

Unfortunately I had to force the config thing to happen, since every stick controller is different. What works fine for one would be nonstop fire up and to the left for someone else. Anyways,... all you have to do is save the config once and then it won't come up again unless you delete the .cfg file.

Those without a controller can just save right away, since the default is null on all axis controls. The keyboard method leaves a lot to be desired over the stick method though. I have no plans to change this, since it really is a 2 stick game, not a keyboard/mouse game.

Anybody have problems with this other than the above mentioned ones? Any one unable to configure at all? How about framerates on slower systems?

Yan(Posted 2006) [#18]
I couldn't work out how to configure and use a joy pad on port 1. Is this possible at the moment?

AdrianT(Posted 2006) [#19]
works fine on my old xbox controller. you just have to read the configuator text properly. Got me the first time as I wasn't expecting the second one for each stick to be up.

Pongo(Posted 2006) [#20]
Melvin,

not in the current build. I stripped out that code from the config utility as well to make things more simple.

I assume you have two controllers hooked up and want to use the second one?

Yan(Posted 2006) [#21]
Yeah, no problem.

I'll just have to muster up the energy to unplug one of the pads. ;o)

daaan(Posted 2006) [#22]
Very killer. This is turning out to be pretty good. Keep it up!

jhocking(Posted 2006) [#23]
Is there any chance you can give away the config utility, maybe add it to the Code Archives? It's tres cool.

Stevie G(Posted 2006) [#24]
Joe .. it's already in there :)

stayne(Posted 2006) [#25]
pongo... check your email.

jhocking(Posted 2006) [#26]
Why, so it is.
