App Market, Statistics?

Monkey Archive Forums/Digital Discussion/App Market, Statistics?

Hey, I'm just starting to crank out a bunch of "little" apps to get my feet wet in this stuff. Then I'll move on to bigger mobile projects.. but anyways:

I'm wondering how lucrative the mobile arena is right now? How does the "average" app do in revenue/download/ad statistics? I'd love to hear from anyone willing to share. Of course we've all heard the mega-rich stories like Angry Birds, but how does one realistically do if their app doesn't hit the viral wave?

Thanks!

A small exercise for you to have a look at:

Have a look at the number of downloads for both the free and paid versions of some apps.(shown on the android app market - assuming you're using the android market.no idea if this is on the apple app market)

this may give you some idea of the conversion rate from free->paid.

without marketing / advertisement do not count for larger profits (which costs when You want to do it in a professional way) regardless of the game quality. If You just throw product into the market it will gain popularity very slowly (and mainly due to cool name / cool icon / similar products and being visible in the "news") so You need to update it a quite often.

That is a pity that product it self is less important then the package.

Second issue is that there are so many sales models that choosing proper one for proper product is also very important. My personal favourite is random seed generator (which returns the same map on request) for completely free ware game.

PS; http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/iphone-app-business-models-paid-free/ this is exactly what i am talking about = sales driven production.

There is no such thing as an average app. 90% of everything is is crap so the "average" Android app is doing very poorly. Even free, well written, generally fun games (like one of my favourites, this free remake of Amiga classic Logical) only manages between 1000 and 5000 downloads. Which depending on how you measure it, is probably well below the median (that is in the lower half of all apps downloaded).

There are a few crappy games with great package and many good games without package at all. IMHO Do not count does into average.
