Need Monkey-X developer for small project

Monkey Forums/Monkey Programming/Need Monkey-X developer for small project

I don't know if this is an appropriate place to post this, but we have some code in Monkey-X and need some help to figure out how to make some changes. This will start as a consulting gig to review the code, but we may just ask you to complete the project if you're interested. We can't seem to find many people with Monkey-X experience, so that is why we are reaching out on this forum.

Thanks.

"We can't seem to find many people with Monkey-X experience, so that is why we are reaching out on this forum."

Are you telling me that you first look for help on other forums? :))

We started with a job posting on another website. If I want a java developer, I don't go to the language forum, I start with a job website. Plus, not all forums welcome job postings. Anyway, interested in helping out?

@lwm: ...but we have some code in Monkey-X and need some help to figure out how to make some changes.

If you don't mind me asking, which code is this? It sounds strange that you've inherited Monkey-X code from someone. Who was the original developer?

lwm(Posted 2015) [#5]
We licensed the code but it doesn't have guaranteed support. There is nothing strange about the situation we're in though - this is no different from a situation where you hired someone and they leave you with code that you have to maintain. Unfortunately for us, we didn't realize that Monkey-X is not so widely used. We are still trying to contact the author, but we need to move a little faster.

To your question - I prefer not to put the author's name on a public forum, but would be happy to discuss the details privately. We have the license and you can verify with the author that we indeed purchased the code.

It's the right forum, but not the right sub-forum. Maybe someone can move the thread to Monkey Programming or Monkey Discussion, which seem better suited. There are a few people on the board who offer their services for this sort of thing. SKN3 comes to mind.

@lwm
To be honest, I just wanted to know whether the code was using the Diddy framework.

lwm(Posted 2015) [#8]
I don't know - we can check if that is important to know. If we knew, we would have licensed code with a more widely used language. Would you be interested in consulting with us on this?

abakobo(Posted 2015) [#9]
It would help if you copy the first lines of code where the "import" are written.
There's some different frameworks. And with the imports we can see wich one is/are used. What is crucial to know if someone can help.
Monkey is a transcompiler so it is possible to get your code on a more common language fairly easily.
Do you look for debugging or feature adding?

lwm(Posted 2015) [#10]
I will email you directly, but for the benefit of those following this thread, here are the responses:

1/Which file would I be looking at for the import statements? I have a Mac, and from my quick research, the Jungle IDE is only for Windows so I haven't really explored the code in a way that an IDE would have made it easier. I'm not a developer (I used to be one a while back, so I can find my way around code with some help on where to look).

2/ We are looking for feature additions and not debugging. This is a 2D iOS game. New features include additional in-app purchases, integration with Flurry analytics, Appirator, and some graphics integration. We have the Objective-C++ code that I believe was generated by Monkey-X. However, all the code is in one class, with no comments or intuitive method names, making it very difficult to use the native code to add new features. At first we thought we would use the Objective-C++ code, but after seeing what we had, we figured that we might have better luck working with the Monkey-X source than trying to work with one huge file. This is part of what we want someone to assess for us - do we just work with Monkey-X or try to deal with the 1-file objective C++ code.

Pharmhaus(Posted 2015) [#11]

Which file would I be looking at for the import statements?

Each *.monkey file starts with a definition of what is needed by this part of the program.
When you open the *.monkey file(s) (e.g. as regular text) you'll see some lines like
Import mojo

This indicates what is used as development foundation.

2/ We are looking for feature additions

Well, if Raul is is not interested/ busy you could try asking Skn3.

Skn3(Posted 2015) [#12]
Thanks for the referral(s)! Have responded to email :)

lwm(Posted 2015) [#13]
@Pharmhaus - thanks for the pointer. Btw, who is Raul? I'm already in touch with skn3.

MikeHart(Posted 2015) [#14]
the first guy who responded to your post here in this topic.

Raul(Posted 2015) [#15]
@lwm:
I am the guilty one!

Skn3 is a talented guy (better than me) and I am pretty sure he will be able to help you.

When I work for others I like to start the project from 0. You can see some of my games in my signature :)

Now let's clear something up here... When you say you want a Monkey-X developer; do you mean someone that can modify Monkey-X, write Monkey-X modules, or simply to work on a game or app using Monkey-X as the programming tool?

lwm(Posted 2015) [#17]
It's a game is using Monkey-X as the programming tool, and we want someone who can modify code to add a few features to it.
